2024-2025 Salary Grade: 67 

Salary Range – As of Jan 1, 2024

Hiring Salary $51,000 Mid-Point $60,440

Starting annual salary for this position is $51,000 and will be $2,000 more annually if applicant holds an Associate’s Degree and $4,000 more annually if applicant holds a Bachelor’s Degree.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to :

  • Patrolling school campus in their assigned patrol vehicle or on foot; checking doors and windows, examining premises of unoccupied classrooms or buildings, detecting unusual conditions, may maintain surveillance and observation for stolen property, missing persons or suspects.
  • Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, student disputes, loud and disruptive behavior, completes calls by determining true nature of the situation and taking whatever legal action is warranted.
  • Acts as a liaison resource to school administration, having all criminal law violations occurring at the school investigated, documents and investigates violations of law and ordinances.
  • Develops and maintains positive and effective working relationships with school staff, students, administrative personnel, parents, the media and other officers.
  • Assists the school in planning special events.
  • Assists law enforcement officers from other agencies with their investigations concerning students attending the school where the School Resource Officer is assigned.
  • Operates a two-way radio, maintains vehicle, weapons and other equipment in standard working order.
  • Becomes familiar with the students of the assigned school and assists them in identifying problems and concerns.
  • Gives information and directions to visitors and the general public. Attends monthly and regularly scheduled training classes and other training as allowed or required.
  • Assists administration and faculty in the formulation and presentation of educational programs dealing with legal and social issues. Attends after school events and extra  curricular activities such as parent-teacher organizations, sporting events, and graduations.
  • Also coordinates and schedules additional officers to assist with events requiring multiple officers at after school events.
  • Participates, when requested, in student/parent meetings and provides mentoring strategies, when applicable.
  • Identifies community resources for support of the students and faculty. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • Applicants must have the ability to sit, stand, walk and drive a patrol vehicle as needed.
  • Exert moderate physical effort, typically involving some combination of walking, standing, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling and may involve lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight.

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Graduation from high school documented by a diploma or transcript.
  • Applicant must possess a certificate of graduation from Basic Law Enforcement Training (B.L.E.T.) with a minimum of one year of experience in law enforcement and hold a general certification as a sworn law enforcement officer.
  • Previous years of experience in law enforcement will be recognized when establishing salary.
