Captain of Criminal Investigations

The Criminal Investigations Division is composed of a team of dedicated Detectives and civilian employees committed to the relentless pursuit of truth and justice for the citizens of Beaufort County. Criminal Investigations Division Detectives investigate crimes against persons and property committed in our jurisdiction, which include the following:

  • Homicides and Suspicious Deaths

  • Robberies, Aggravated Assaults, and Kidnappings

  • All Sexual Assaults

  • Human Trafficking and Prostitution

  • Burglaries, Breaking and Entering, Felonious Larceny

  • Financial Crimes: Frauds, Forgery and Uttering, Embezzlement and Extortion

Training

The Criminal Investigation Division also has specialized Detectives that maintain certifications and annual training in Computer and Digital Forensics, Internet Crimes Against Children, and Sheriff Hammonds’s A.C.E. of Hearts Initiative - Animal, Children, and Elderly Crimes.

Crime Scenes

The Criminal Investigation Division also processes active crime scenes, identifying, collecting, preserving, and conducting examinations of physical evidence and recovering these items that will later be used as evidence in trials and criminal proceedings. The members of the unit receive specialized training in various fields, including the use of Trimble Geospatial forensics, alternate light sources, scientific chemical testing, advanced photography techniques, advanced fingerprint lifting techniques, and latent print examination. The unit can process any crime scene from a minor incident to a major homicide.

Evidence Handling

Property and Evidence are maintained by the Criminal Investigation Division, ensuring the secure chain-of-custody, recovery, and return of stolen property while maintaining the integrity of all evidence for trial.

Support

The Criminal Investigation Division also provides both investigative and general support to other divisions of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office to accomplish departmental goals and objectives. The division also works closely with other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
