Christopher Kelly

Sergeant over School Resource Officers

I was born in Northern Ireland and moved to the United States in 2001 with my mother and two siblings. I am currently a resident of Beaufort County and married to a Beaufort County native. I went to school at Bath Elementary and then Northside High School. I then went to Beaufort County Community College for Basic Law Enforcement Training and later obtained an Associate of Science in Criminal Justice. I have been in law enforcement since 2011 starting at the Belhaven Police Department, where I remained until this past April when I made the transition to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. I have over fourteen years of law enforcement experience, and currently possess my advanced law enforcement certificate from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards commission.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer (SRO) Program places dedicated, highly trained deputies in our local schools to keep students safe and support their success. Our SROs follow the nationally recognized “Triad” model, serving as:

  • Law Enforcement Officers – Preventing and responding to incidents while maintaining a visible, proactive presence

  • Mentors & Role Models – Building trusting relationships with students, offering guidance, and promoting positive choices

  • Educators – Teaching classes on critical topics such as drug awareness, internet safety, bullying prevention, and conflict resolution

Selected for their experience, communication skills, and passion for working with youth, our SROs partner daily with school staff, families, and the community to create secure, welcoming, and supportive learning environments where every student can thrive.

I’m a Macclesfield native, born and raised in Edgecombe County. I graduated from Southwest Edgecombe High School, then went on to get my Telecommunicator Certification from Nash Community College. A little later, I completed Basic Law Enforcement Training at Edgecombe Community College and finally stepped into the Law Enforcement career. I started out as a Telecommunicator at Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office, dispatching for Law Enforcement, EMS, and Fire. Working the radio taught me a lot about remaining calm, communicating clearly, and being there for people on their worst days. After gaining that experience, I transitioned to the other side of the radio and became a Sworn Law Enforcement Officer working Patrol with the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office. Growing up in a big, blended family with eight siblings, I always knew I wanted to work with kids and families. Whether I’m in the school as an SRO or out on patrol, my goal is simple, it is to Encourage, Shape, and Guide. I’m here to build trust, be a positive influence, and serve ALL citizens the best way I can.
