Gary Brown
Chief Deputy
Chief Deputy Brown began his law enforcement career in 1995 serving as a Police Officer with the Robersonville Police Department. Chief Deputy Brown than joined the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, serving as a Patrol Deputy and later as a Criminal Investigator. Chief Deputy Brown joined the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in 1998 and served in various positions, retiring as the Captain of Field Operations in 2023. Desiring to continue his service to his community, Chief Deputy Brown joined the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office in 2023. Chief Deputy Brown has served as Captain of Professional Standards, overseeing the School Resource Officer program, Internal Affairs, Accreditation, and Training, prior to his current appointment. Chief Deputy Brown holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Criminology as well as a Master of Business Administration.
Chief Deputy Brown serves as the second-in-command of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, overseeing daily operations and supporting the Sheriff in fulfilling the agency’s mission to protect and serve the residents of Beaufort County. He provides strategic leadership, guides operational priorities, and ensures that deputies and staff have the resources they need to deliver professional, community-focused law enforcement services.

Roles and Responsibilities

Assists the Sheriff with planning, directing, and coordinating all divisions and bureaus of the Sheriff’s Office, including patrol, investigations, detention, and administrative services.​

Oversees budgets, staffing, and policy implementation to ensure safe, efficient, and accountable operations.​

Represents the Sheriff’s Office at community meetings, interagency work groups, and with local government partners, helping maintain open communication and collaboration across the county.​

Assumes command of the agency in the absence of the Sheriff, maintaining continuity of leadership and critical decision-making.​

Jeremy Hewitt
Major
Major Hewitt joined the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office in 2005 and has served in roles including detention officer, patrol deputy, patrol corporal, patrol sergeant, patrol lieutenant, patrol captain, jail administrator, and major.
Major Hewitt serves as a senior commander with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, providing strategic leadership and oversight for critical functions within the agency.

Major Hewitt’s leadership contributes to the safe and secure operation of the detention facility while fostering strong partnerships with the community through proactive crime prevention and engagement programs.
