The Professional Standards Division oversees departmental training, the School Resource Officer (SRO) program, North Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation (NCLEA), policy development, and internal affairs. These functions reflect the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office’s long-standing commitment to professionalism, accountability, and service. The division’s creation underscores Sheriff Hammonds’ dedication to maintaining high standards and strengthening trust within our community.

Training
The Sheriff’s Office provides deputies with high-quality, up-to-date training to address today’s challenges and prepare for emerging issues in our county. Continuous training supports effective service and enhances public safety.

School Resource Officers (SROs)
Beginning with the 2024–2025 school year, the Sheriff’s Office has reinstated the SRO program in every public school across the county. Each campus is staffed with a trained, certified SRO whose mission is to provide a safe learning environment and serve as a professional resource for students, parents, and school personnel.

North Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation (NCLEA)
NCLEA, established in 2023 by state training and standards commissions, is a voluntary accreditation program for North Carolina law enforcement agencies. Accreditation is awarded to agencies that exceed established professional standards. Sheriff Hammonds is committed to achieving accreditation as part of his focus on transparency, accountability, and excellence.

Policy Development
The Sheriff’s Office maintains policies that reflect current statutes, case law, and best practices. This is accomplished through collaboration with legal counsel and partner agencies to ensure policies are clear, effective, and aligned with professional expectations.

Internal Affairs
Internal Affairs is responsible for ensuring that all members of the Sheriff’s Office uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. The unit receives and investigates all complaints regarding employee conduct, reinforcing accountability and public trust.
