James Mills

Captain of Patrol

Spanning 958 square miles (the fifth-largest county in North Carolina), Beaufort County presents unique challenges—from vast rural landscapes to growing communities. The men and women of the Patrol Division are the frontline guardians of public safety, delivering law enforcement services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to the unincorporated areas of the county while standing ready to support our municipal partners.

Around-the-Clock Protection
Organized into four rotating shifts, each staffed with two supervisors and five highly trained deputies, Patrol never rests. Day or night, in fair weather or storm, a Patrol unit is only minutes away.

What We Respond To
Our deputies are first on scene for a wide range of calls, including:

  • Domestic violence and sexual assaults

  • Robberies, assaults, larcenies, and frauds

  • Commercial and residential burglaries and property crimes

  • Alarm responses

  • Traffic enforcement, crashes, and complaints

  • Welfare checks and animal-related issues

Beyond the Call of Duty
Patrol deputies proudly serve the community in many additional ways:

  • Providing escorts for parades, charity events, and funerals

  • Speaking at schools, career days, and community events

  • Securing crime scenes and assisting the Criminal Investigations Division and Drug Unit

  • Supporting Fire and EMS at emergency incidents, hazmat scenes, and natural disasters

  • Leading initial response in search-and-rescue operations for missing persons

  • Safely transporting individuals in mental health crises to appropriate facilities across the state

K-9 Unit

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit supports patrol operations, investigations, and community safety. Each team consists of a trained deputy and a certified working dog who work together in detection, tracking, searches, apprehension, and obedience. Continuous training ensures every team is ready to respond when needed.

The Patrol Division is committed to preserving peace, protecting life and property, and building trust—one call, one contact, one community at a time.
