Scam Alert: Internet Service Provider Scam
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a utility/internet scam involving callers who appear to have detailed personal information about their intended victims.
In a recent incident, a Beaufort County resident received a call from a number displaying an Idaho area code. The caller claimed to be with Optimum and knew the resident’s name, address, and exact auto-draft payment amount. The caller then attempted to obtain new card information over the phone.
⚠️ Remember: Scammers can have personal information about you and may sound professional and convincing.
🔴 RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR:
Unexpected calls from out-of-state numbers
Claims that a payment failed or there is an account problem
Requests for credit/debit card information over the phone
Callers who already know personal information about you
Pressure to provide information immediately
🛡️ PROTECT YOURSELF:
Never provide personal or financial information to an unsolicited caller.
Hang up and contact the company directly using the phone number on your bill or official website.
Check your account independently to verify whether there is actually a payment issue.
