Sheriff Hammonds Attends NC Sheriffs’ Association Annual Business Conference

This week, the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association hosted sheriffs, sheriffs’ personnel, and their families for their Annual Business Conference. Sheriff Hammonds was among the attendees. Commenting on the experience, Sheriff Hammonds said, “I’ve had a great week at the 2026 Annual Business Conference! I’m always grateful for an opportunity to collaborate with fellow sheriffs from across the state. The training classes and discussions offered at the Annual Business Conference were top-notch and provided valuable knowledge that I can bring back to Beaufort County.”
The Association hosts this multi-day conference each summer, and it consists of several days of training classes, panel discussions, and networking with fellow law enforcement officers and state government officials. Training topics included sessions about the Office of Sheriff finance and techniques to address businesses selling vapes and THC products. Special guest speakers, law enforcement leaders and elected officials also delivered remarks to the sheriffs during the conference.
Each year during the Annual Business Conference, the Association also elects new Executive Committee officers. This year’s election saw four sheriffs elected to new offices:
President – Sheriff Cleveland “Clee” Atkinson, Edgecombe County
First Vice President – Sheriff Jeff Crisco, Stanly County
Second Vice President – Sheriff Chip Hughes, Craven County
Third Vice President – Sheriff Brian Chism, Brunswick County
Additionally, Sheriff Joey Lemons of Stokes County was reelected as Secretary and Sheriff Van Shaw of Cabarrus County was reelected as Treasurer.
Sheriff Clee Atkinson of Edgecombe County, newly elected President, commented on his new role. "It is an honor to continue serving on the Association’s Executive Committee for another year, and I am excited to step into this new role and fill the shoes of the President. Myself and the rest of the Executive Committee will remain dedicated to serving and protecting the Office of Sheriff and all law enforcement in North Carolina."
