Weather Update / Administrative Office Closure

As we head into tonight, temperatures are plummeting well below freezing. Any remaining snow from today will refreeze, and black ice will form quickly—especially on bridges, overpasses, elevated roads like the Hwy 17 bypass, and untreated surfaces.

Travel will be extremely dangerous tonight and into the early morning hours. If at all possible, stay home and off the roads. If you must travel, go slow, increase following distance, avoid sudden stops/turns, and assume ice is present even if roads look clear.

To the dedicated deputies, detention staff, and tele-communicators of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office: Thank you for continuing to work diligently through these freezing conditions—answering calls, assisting citizens, and keeping our community safe around the clock.

A huge thank you also to all road crews, utility teams, emergency services, and first responders who are out braving the bitter cold to treat roads, respond to incidents, and provide essential help during this prolonged winter event. Your hard work and sacrifice mean everything to us.

Our Administrative Office will be closed tomorrow, Monday, February 2nd, 2026

Stay vigilant, stay warm, and look out for one another. If you need assistance tonight, don’t hesitate to call us.

-Sheriff Scott Hammonds
