From Sheriff Hammonds

As August begins and students across Beaufort County prepare to return to school, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the work accomplished by the men and women of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office during July.


Throughout the month, our deputies, detention staff, investigators, and support personnel remained committed to protecting our communities, supporting victims, and providing professional service to the residents of Beaufort County. From major criminal investigations and proactive enforcement efforts to community outreach, training, and employee development, our team worked every day to uphold the trust you place in us.


PUBLIC SAFETY INCIDENTS

July included several significant cases involving drug trafficking, violent crime, weapons offenses, burglary investigations, animal cruelty, and fugitive apprehensions. These investigations often require extensive collaboration between divisions and partner agencies, and I am proud of the dedication demonstrated by our personnel in pursuing justice and protecting public safety.


COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT STORIES

Equally important are the relationships we build beyond enforcement. During July, members of our agency participated in community education initiatives, advanced professional training, leadership development opportunities, and statewide law enforcement collaboration efforts. Investing in our people allows us to better serve you.


As we look ahead to the new school year, I encourage all residents to join us in promoting school safety, responsible driving, and positive engagement with our students and educators. Together, we can help create an environment where every child feels safe, supported, and prepared to succeed.

Safety Tips: School Safety & Bullying Prevention

As students return to school across Beaufort County, remember that creating a safe learning environment is a shared responsibility. Parents, students, motorists, and community members all play an important role in helping our children have a safe and successful school year.

Show/Hide Tips

  • Slow down in school zones and remain alert during morning and afternoon school traffic.

  • Put distractions away while driving. A moment of inattention can have serious consequences.

  • Talk openly about bullying. Encourage children to report concerns to a trusted adult.

  • Monitor online activity and discuss responsible use of social media, messaging apps, and online gaming platforms.

  • Encourage students to speak up if they see threats, suspicious activity, or behavior that could put someone at risk. Reports can be made through the Say Something anonymous reporting system.

  • Keep emergency contact information current with your child's school.

  • Get to know your child's School Resource Officer (SRO) and encourage students to view law enforcement as a trusted resource. Learn more about the deputies serving Beaufort County Schools on our Meet Your SRO webpage.


A safe school year starts with awareness, communication, and community involvement. By working together, we can help ensure every student in Beaufort County is safe, supported, and ready to learn.
